After a recent trip to the beautiful UT backcountry, a friend asked what some of my favorite books for the southwest are. I have a list of favorite books and resources that cover UT and AZ.  The list below is by no means fully comprehensive and only touches the tip of the iceberg. There are hundreds of really great resources and top-notch reads for trip-planning to the southwest.

Here are a couple of my favorites:

There are so many books on the Southwest, including field guides, backpack guides, day hikes, photography, history, archeology, and more… The Southwest is a place that is very dear to me and I could happily spend more time finding and reading books and resources on the subject. Better yet, more time IN the field WITH the books would be great! Send me your favorites for trip planning, backpack guides, hiking, day tripping, history, natural history, botany, archeology, and geology.  Learning about the places we visit makes the time all the more valuable and the memories longer lasting.

Happy Reading and Happy Trails!

ps. This list doesn’t even begin to cover the wonderful memoirs, biographies and autobiographies of travelers to the southwest. Some of my favorites are Terry Tempest Williams, Ann Zwinger, Aaron Ralston, and a new biography on Harvey Butchart, Grand Obsession: Harvey Butchart and the Exploration of Grand Canyon by Elias Butler and Tom Myers. What are some of your favorite survival memoirs?
