I finished reading Bless Me Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya and was stunned by this beautiful story. I will be rereading and taking notes throughout, notes that I can save and refer back to. The language, poetry, and style were exquisitely impressionable and this is one book that will end up as a top read for 2008 from my bookshelf.

Also on my bookshelf right now is quite a set of titles relating to exploration, and travel memoirs. I’m currently reading Walking the Gobi by Helen Thayer, which is an intriguing story to begin with, especially in geography and region. I am taken by desert landscapes and stories of the desert. This memoir is one not to pass up! Additional travel memoirs on my book shelf include A Blistered Kind of Love: One Couple’s Trial by Trail by Angela & Duffy Ballard, Where the Pavement Ends: One Woman’s Bicycle Trip Through Mongolia, China & Vietnam by Erika Warmbrunn, and The Conde Nast Traveler Book of Unforgettable Journeys, edited by Klara Glowczewksa.

Other titles on my bookshelf include Ahab’s Wife or the Star Gazer by Sena jeter Naslund, Wesley the Owl: The Remarkable Love Story of an Owl and His Girl by Stacey O’Brien, Zarafa: A Giraffe’s True Story, from Deep in Africa to the Heart of Paris by Michael Allin, The Black Death: A Personal History by John Hatcher, and lastly The Plague by Albert Camus. I plan to finish and post about these titles before the end of the year (one can dream, can’t she?).

Actually, my bookshelf is teeter-tottering and there are even more books that on this posting waiting to be read from my bookshelf/nightstand and even more books spilling onto the floors and crammed in every nook and cranny of spare space I can find. I adore books and reading and the engagement of the mind. I wouldn’t have it any other way! It’s been 7 years almost to the date since we’ve last watched TV and I can say I don’t miss it at all. I especially don’t miss the advertisements nor all the commercialism. I say, turn off the TV and read more banned books! (Banned Books week is over by what 3-4 weeks now, but that is one great list of books!)

I will soon post a lengthy dissertation (of sorts) on Bless Me Ultima and other titles. Happy Reading!
